Program: Banned Books Week event grants
Award: $1,000 or $2,500
Grants will support "Read-Outs" or other activities that celebrate
Banned Books Week (Sept. 30 - Oct. 6,
2012). A Banned Books Week Read-Out is an event at which people gather
to read from books that have been banned or challenged over the years,
to celebrate the freedom to read. 2012 marks the 30th anniversary of
Banned Books Week. The Freedom to Read Foundation is the First
Amendment legal defense affiliate of the American Library Association
(ALA)

Program: Transforming Collections
Award: Two $1,500 microgrants
Eligible: ALCTS members
The microgrant program is designed to support and encourage innovative
practices, emerging technologies and innovation in collections.
Microgrants are intended for small projects or research initiatives in
support of transforming collections. Microgrant proposals should
include:
Statement describing how the project or research initiative supports
transforming collections.
Clear and concise description of the project or research initiative.
Preliminary budget
Microgrant proposals should be no more than one page in length.

Program: Children's books (fiction or non-fiction)
Award: $500 - $3,000 for book purchases
Eligible: Public libraries, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and school libraries
Grants to purchase books published for young people preschool through
grade 8. The Foundation provides grants to libraries or organizations
that serve economically or socially at-risk children, have limited book
budgets, and demonstrate real need.

Agency: Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS); Urban Libraries
Council (ULC); & Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC)
Program: Learning Labs in Libraries and Museums
Award: up to $100,000 for 18 month period
Eligible: Non-profit organizations and units of local government
These grants will support the planning and designing of up to 30
Learning Labs in libraries and museums throughout the country. The Labs
are intended to engage middle- and high-school youth in mentor-led,
interest-based, youth-centered, collaborative learning using digital and
traditional media. Grantees will be required to participate, in-person
and online, in a community of practice that will provide technical
assistance, networking, and cross-project learning. Projects are
expected to provide prototypes for the field and be based on current
research about digital media and youth learning.
