Although we regularly make grant opportunities available on this list,
it's important to remember that grants from private organizations (such
as foundations) make up just a small percentage of philanthropic giving
in the U.S.
Did you know that gifts from individuals account for 75% of all annual
giving? Library supporters and donors can be an important source of
unrestricted dollars to meet your library's most basic needs. If you
haven't yet started a fundraising program, now may just be the time.
Luckily, there's a great new source to help you get started. ALA has
just published the Frontline Fundraising Toolkit
<http://www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/advocacy/advocacyuniversity/front
line_fundraising_toolkit/fft.pdf> , which walks you through identifying
potential donors, setting up an Annual Fund, how to approach planned
giving, and building relationships with donors. An initiative of current
ALA President Roberta Stevens, the workbook is available from the
Frontline Fundraising
<http://www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/advocacy/frontlinefundraising/ind
ex.cfm> website at ALA, and offers commonsense tips and best practices
to help get you started, no matter what the size of your library, and no
matter what your level of experience with fundraising.
Fundraising isn't as scary as it seems, and this book gives you some
important tools, and even some sample scripts and letters, to guide you
through the process.
Good luck!
